Heschel's classic works on the major Old Testament prophets together in one volume. Heschel seeks to understand the major prophets of the seventh and eighth centuries B.C.E. through an analysis and description of their individual consciousnesses. Consciousness means, for Heschel, "the perception of particular moments of inspiration," and "the totality of impressions, thoughts, and feelings which make up prophet's being." His emphasis on the prophet as a person is unique in biblical exegesis, and his understanding of the total prophetic picture is truly impressive. He ties together with clarity and wisdom the life of the prophet and the message they were called to reveal to the people, reminding us that "we cannot fully understand what they meant to say to us unless we have some degree of awareness of what happened to them." Overview of The Prophets, by Abraham Joshua Heschel: Theologically conservative (Orthodox/Conservative Judaism) An independent, Jewish look at the prophets which shaped the faith of Israel Offers a profile and synopsis of the lives and messages of Isaiah, Jeremiah, Hosea, Micah, Habakkuk, and Amos Based on the Revised Standard Version (RSV) A section-by-section look at the major prophetic voices from the seventh and eighth centuries B.C.E.
