Is suffering salvific? What is Gods attitude toward and involvement with suffering? This work by Aloysius Rego explores these questions through the lens of Edward Schillebeeckxs later theology. While Schillebeeckxs earlier view of suffering centered almost exclusively on the individual and the personal, this emphasis shifted in his later theology due to a visit to the United States during the social upheaval of the 1960s and his encounters with the Frankfort School of critical theory. Rego elucidates this change, beginning with an investigation of Schillebeeckxs earlier theology and then turning to his appreciation and critique of Adorno, Gaedemer, and Habermas. He then follows Schillebeeckxs thought through experience, types of suffering, and finally to Christology, the center of his theology. Erudite and careful, Regos Suffering and Salvation not only provides a more nuanced understanding of Schillebeeckx but also reflects deeply on the relationship between our current displeasures and our future redemption.
